Suzuki's GSX-R1000

Suzuki's GSX-R1000 has been considerably revised for 2005, with an increase in capacity and reduced weight – although Suzuki won't quote power or torque outputs yet.

The bore has been increased by 0.4mm, bringing actual capacity up from 988cc to 999cc, just inside the one-litre limit for World Superbikes.

The motor breathes in through 44mm throttle bodies and out through a new, bulkier titanium tailpipe - although Hamamatsu has resisted the temptation to put it under the seat like everybody else.

Suzuki has reduced the rake to shorten the wheelbase by five millimetres to 1405mm without reducing the length of the swing-arm; the seat height has been lowered by a significant 20mm to 810mm

The front brakes retain their class-leading four-pot Tokico radial mount callipers but the discs have grown by 10mm to 310mm

While tank capacity remains the same at 18 litres, the body panels have been carefully revised to make the bike lower, slimmer and shorter, resulting in a weight reduction of two kilograms to a positively anorexic 166kg.

So far there's no word from Suzuki SA as to when the 2005 Gixer will be available here.

With the muscle car wars already beginning to heat up this summer, speculators have been doing there level best at speculating on what direction FoMoCo will be boldly moving towards for the 2009 model year of it's hard-charging pony car.

Some claim it'll look similar to the Giugiaro Mustang from this year's LA show, with others claiming it'll get a shooting brake re-make. All the rumors do seem to suggest at the very least it'll receive a bit of a front face lift to tighten the skin over the sagging Sid Ramnarace and J Mays "retro-futurism" exterior in an attempt make it look more like the PYT it wants to be when compared with the new-to-the-block Camaro and Challenger.

In addition to the collagen implant in front, there are mumblings of a retractable hardtop in the offing. Under the hood, there's rumors the GT version will be tweaked with output going up to...

...the 350-horsepower range -- and maybe more. Well, at least more in the fervent hopes and dreams of Mustang-lovers everywhere. Though no spy shots have yet been snapped of this horse in the wild, Autobytel has an illustration, courtesy of Priddy & Co., of the direction they think it's going to take.

CRYSTAL COVE, Calif. -- The sun is a soft glow on the still-slumbering Pacific at dawn, before the ocean awakes with yawning waves, and the seaside shops blink open their shutters.

But nearby is the sound and smell of serious horsepower. Engines are roaring as Lamborghinis, rare Porsche speedsters and lime-green Vipers roll almost regally into the lot of a strip mall perched high above the sea. The surfers may still be sleeping, but the car nuts are most definitely awake.

Every Saturday morning, and we do mean morning -- not even the local Starbucks is open -- hundreds of exotic-car owners and admirers from across southern California gather to gawk, preen and convene in a loosely organized exotic and classic-car extravaganza known simply by its location: Crystal Cove.

Row after row of hand-built kit cars, super cars and every kind of impracticality on wheels, sit alongside pristine American muscle and Italian fancy. One stunning black-and-white exotic with a white bubble cockpit perched on a black, sharp-nosed hood resembled an Oreo cookie that might, at any moment, take flight.

By 7 a.m., the parking lot is so filled with expensive, one-of-kind metal that when a Mercedes CLK 320 slides by, the only head that turns is that of the protective owner of a 427 Cobra who gives the Mercedes driver a look that distinctly says, "Don't you dare scratch my baby with that trash."

Sprinkled among the owners and admirers are a smattering of car designers who regularly drop in for a shot of inspiration. (Ford designers are such fans that the auto parade recently relocated to Ford's design studio parking lot in Irvine after noise complaints.)

On this day, the pros include Ford designer Tyler Blake, a young, soft-spoken guy in jeans whose eyes light up behind rimless glasses when he walks by a bright-blue 1970 Chevelle SS -- a tough, American muscle machine that looks like something a Clint Eastwood character would shoot you from.

"That's one of my favorite cars," Blake says, doing the typical designer dance -- view it from the front, kneel down, step back a few paces, come forward, walk around to the back, repeat. "It's so tough."

Blake, like other designers who can't seem to resist the call of Crystal Cove, see something different when they look at these cars. They talk about distance between wheels, proportion, the size of the hood, or it's volume. Walking through rows of cars with Blake is like walking through a museum with an art professor.

"Look at the way the light plays off the sheet metal," he says, gazing at a '55 Porsche, seemingly unperturbed that the Starbucks has still not opened. "You really can't get that anywhere else in the U.S. but here."

Blake loves American muscle cars, he says, for all the typical boy reasons, but also for their proportion. "There's a balancing point those designers achieved with proportion, the vast hood, the tough shoulders of the car. There's nothing like American muscle."

"Look at that," Blake says, nodding toward a 1970 Boss Mustang. "You could make a whole Focus out of the sheet metal on that hood."

Since Blake transferred from Detroit to Ford's design center in Irvine, he says he's starting to draw with more color. He comes to the Cove at least once a month just to be around passionate car owners, he says, and to be bombarded with the beauty and history of the past -- and also to be reminded of what differentiates a trend from true classic design.

A tricked-out silver Hummer drives past slowly. "See, that's cheesy and trendy," he says. "It just goes too far." He gestures toward the '55 Porsche. The lines are so classic, so elegant that "it's timeless. Even now, it looks modern."

That's what he's striving for in his work at Ford. He was already on the team that designed a compact, futuristic sports car, called the Reflex, released as a concept car at the 2006 Detroit auto show.

But at 33, Blake has got decades of work ahead of him. And plenty of time to create something so memorable, that 50 years from now, if he succeeds, it will glide into this parking lot and some young designer will stand in front of it, back up, kneel down and shake his head in pure admiration.

The Ascari A10 sports car, developed by British manufacturers and similar to the Spanish GT version, is rated in the top ten supercars for 2006. The builders of the A10, not to be outdone by their competitors and to ensure adequate braking at such high speeds, have installed ventilated ceramic disc brakes, with 6-pot calipers on the front and 4-pot calipers on the rear.

There was no better way to celebrate 80 years of history. Even though success actually arrived one year after the anniversary, the 2007 season has been a memorable one for Ducati , the sporting motorbike Italian company founded in 1926. Its GP7 model, driven by Casey Stoner, triumphed in the MotoGP World Championship in all three categories (riders, constructors and teams), interrupting 33 years of an unbeaten run of victories by Japanese giants. Its triumph was even more impressive considering that Ducati has started to compete at the highest level of motorbike racing only five seasons ago, in 2003. But the relationship between the Italian team and sporting competitions is long established: its has been a contender in the Superbike category for many years and has won 14 times in the last 17 editions of this world championship.

Sporting inspiration has always been a strong feature of Ducati bikes, as Claudio Domenicali – managing director of Ducati Corse and general director for products in Ducati Motor Holding. “Our added value – he explains – can be resumed in two concepts: sportsmanship and instinctiveness. A direct relationship has been established for many years now between our racing activities and our products’ development, which retain a sporting edge”. Ducati offers a wide range of models in various segments of the market, differentiated by technical specifications, design and target consumer: Superbike, Desmosedici RR, Monster, Multistrada, SportClassic e Hypermotard. Sold in over 60 nations, Ducati bikes are particularly popular in Europe, North America and Japan. They offer a high performances and technological content, and are set apart from the competition thanks to some unique design features such as the “desmodromic” valve timing system, their lattice frame and their distinguishing ‘sound’.

Desmotromic valve timing refers to the exclusive system, developed by the Ducati engineer Fabio Taglioni, that operates both movements (opening and closing) of the valves that inject and extract fuel used in some four-stroke combustion engines. Taglioni had the merit to put into practise and develop for production a system of valve control that had been introduced in motorbike racing in the 50s. The word "desmodromic" is derived from two Greek roots, desmos (controlled, linked) and dromos (course, track). The system is not very common (only Ducati uses it for mass production) because most manufacturers prefer to use a spring system to close the valves. The advantage of the desmodromic system is that it allows to reach higher engine revs without having to use a pneumatic valve system, a complex and extremely expensive technology derived from Formula 1.

As far as the lattice frame is concerned, it is a common feature of all Ducati bikes: built with high resistance tubular steel, it guarantees the maximum rigidity and great directional control. The ‘sound’ of the two-cylinder engine, coupled with those of the exhaust pipes is another trademark of these Italian motorbikes: the roar of a Ducati is unmistakable for enthusiasts. Design is also a distinguishing feature: every Ducati combines motoring technology with the Italian taste for all things beautiful. “We pay extremely high attention to design feature: our customers, paradoxically, are looking first and foremost for an exclusive and eye-catching object, and secondly for a high performance bike”, admits Mr Domenicali. “Our products reward and captivate our overseas clients, especially those from Japan and the US: they choose us because for them buying a Ducati is like having a little piece of Italy”.

These are premises on which the company must build its future development, says Mr Domenicali. “In the next few years we will confirm our strategic vision, i.e. continuing to build sporting motorbikes. Our product range will evolve to match developments in market trends and our models will be thoroughly refreshed”, he assures.

Audi A6


Audi A6 will unveil the next generation A6 as a prototype in 2009 and a production version will follow in 2010. More modern and sporty, the new A6 will use the same design cues as the latest A5 and A4. It will compete with the next generation BMW 5-Series, the Infiniti M and Mercedes E-Class. The 2010 A6 will feature for the first time the LED day headlights, which were used only in the S6. Also the interior will feature a significant change. It will have the same bumpers used in the A5, new air intakes and totally redesigned lights.

In the same way as the newly A4, the future A6 will have the front body overhang drastically shortened and the bonnet and wheelbase will be both longer than before. Most of the component will be made from weight-saving aluminum. The results are expected to be impressive: supremely dynamic road behavior and effortlessly precise handling.

Volkswagen's RaVe 270


Volkswagen's RaVe 270 concept showcases the enormous potential of the automaker's award-winning 2.0T engine.

In current production form, in vehicles such as the GTI and Jetta GLI, this turbocharged four-cylinder generates 200 horsepower. At most, it puts out 230 horses in Europe's 30th-anniversary GTI. In the RaVe 270, however, the 2.0T churns out an impressive 270 horses.

This is VW's most powerful four-cylinder ever.

Modifications were made to the turbocharger, intercooling and engine electronics.

With 4Motion all-wheel drive, the Jetta SportWagen-based RaVe is approaching high-performance territory occupied by Subaru's Impreza WRX and Mitsubishi's Evolution.

From zero to 60 MPH goes by in less than 5.8 seconds, VW says. Top speed is 155 MPH.

One drawback is that the engine requires super-grade fuel.

Other innovations of the RaVe 270 include a 1,400-watt sound system with 13 speakers and subwoofers, sport seats, Biscay Blue paint, an extended hood over xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, quad exhaust pipes, rear diffuser, 19-inch alloy wheels, 18-inch Brembo brakes, lowered suspension, plus numerous exterior styling bits.

It produces 260 horsepower at 5300 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 2500 rpm, making it GM’s highest specific output engine ever at 2.1 horsepower per cubic inch of displacement (130 bhp per liter).

2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS




The legendary Porsche RS nameplate represents the ultimate in racing ability and brings back memories of special Porsche models such as the 1972 Carrera RS 2.7 and 1991 911 RS. The engine has 415 HP screaming to a 8400 rpm redline but the close-ratio six-speed transmission with a single-mass flywheel and 44 lbs lower vehicle weight makes the engine rev up even more freely, thus enabling the 911 GT3 to sprint from zero to 62mph in 4.2 seconds. It takes just 13.3 seconds to hit to 124 mph. Top speed is 187 mph. The new RS body is 1.7 inch wider at the rear (a legacy from the Carrera 4 models with which it shares its shell). The muscular-looking rear conceals a wider track that not only improves directional stability but also increases the potential cornering grip of this hot two-seater coupe. The Porsche GT3 RS will go on sale in both Europe and North America.

2006 Lamborghini Murcielago LP640





With the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, the designers at the Lamborghini Style Centre maintained the traditional Lamborghini principles of purism, sport and function. The Murciélago LP640 now appears even more aggressive, with the new front and rear bumpers contributing significantly to its appearance.

The engine of the new Murcielago LP640 has undergone outstanding and radical modification. The classic V-engine is boosted to 6.5 litres. The already extraordinary 580 hp engine power has now been elevated to an impressive peak of 640 hp at 8,000 rpm.

The increase in power correlates with an increase in performance. The maximum speed is now 340 km/h (before 330 km/h). The excellent performance of the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 means it can now accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds (0.4 seconds faster than the previous model).

Lamborghini engineers also improved the torque development. The engine is enhanced by a continuous variable timing system (intake and exhaust side) and a drive-by-wire engine management system.

Just like its predecessors, the Murciélago LP640 features permanent four-wheel drive, based on the reliable Lamborghini VT (Viscous Traction) system. The system is self-governing and does not feature any electronic controls.

Because of the "Privilegio" customisation program, any Murciélago LP640 can be transformed into a customised sports car. For example, the cockpit can be enhanced with an extremely refined carbon finish applied to the air conditioning control panel, the control lever console and the parking brake.

Tesla Roadster Electric Sports Car





The first electric car manufactured by Tesla Motors, the high-performance, zero-emissions Tesla Roadster sports car, was unveiled before a crowd of car buffs and potential customers. The electric Tesla Roadster has the equivalent of 135 mpg and a range of 250 miles on a single charge, a combination unseen until now in a mass-produced electric car. Its extended range is due to its state-of-the-art lithium-ion Energy Storage System. The Tesla Roadster is capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in four seconds.

Using a unique two-speed electrically activated manual transmission, the Tesla Roadster's power comes from a 3-phase, 4-pole AC induction motor. The motor is controlled by the Power Electronics Module (PEM) which also controls the inverting direct current to 3-phase alternating current, charging and braking systems.

Tesla Motors's engineers have gone to great lengths to ensure that not only is the Tesla Roadster safe to drive, but also is safe when charging, at home or on the road

The electric motor's efficiency rating is likely to be as high as 95 percent, while the internal combustion engine's efficiency is 20 percent or less. With this efficiency, the Tesla Roadster achieves the equivalent of 135 mpg.

That efficiency doesn't slow this sleek sports car down, either. Estimated 0-60 mph time is around four seconds, and with an electric motor, the torque is instantaneous, throw-you-back-in-the-seat responsive.

New Porsche 911 Targa



In November 2006, Porsche AG of Stuttgart, Germany, will start offering dealers two new variants of the eleven series at the same time – the 911 Targa 4 and the 911 Targa 4S. For the very first time, these Porsche models will be available exclusively with permanent all-wheel drive and a body that is 44 millimeters wider at the rear. The Porsche Targa 4 is powered by the familiar flat-six engine, delivering 325 bhp of power from 3.6 liters. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 280 km/h. The more powerful Targa 4S features a 3.8-liter engine outputting 355 bhp. This model sprints to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, and has a top speed of 288 km/h.


2009 Camaro Convertible



This new Camaro will be put into production in 2008 with the convertible version following in 2009. This Camaro convertible will be powered by a 6.0 litre V8 putting power to the rear wheels through a 6 speed transmission.
